Does a feeling of panic start to overcome you when you think about open water mass starts? I do for one, but I've learnt how to overcome this feeling to a large degree...
How to do open water mass starts better!?
Yes the rules have changed recently for entry into Ironman events, and entering in small groups and single file are a much better alternative, you're still going to find yourself running or changing like a banshee into the water with wilful abandon. Its like a testament to a war cry in triathlons. However, with a few simple tips and tactics you can make the whole experience much better and more enjoyable!
Follow these tips to help take away this fear…
Position yourself in the pack so you breathe towards the group. For example if you normally breathe in a race to your right, start on the far left hand side. This way you’ll be out of the melee of the main group, and in your own space more.
Lay / float horizontally in the water prior to the start so you can get the best send off when the gun goes. This also gives you more space around you than a deep water ‘legs down’ start position, limiting people swimming on top of your legs.
